Packaging and Cold Chain Basics for Fresh Produce Export

For fresh produce, the packaging and cold chain matter as much as the product quality at harvest — a well-grown shipment that loses its cold chain for even a few hours can arrive in noticeably worse condition than the grading certificate suggested. This is one of the more useful areas to ask a supplier direct questions about before placing an order, since it's where real logistics capability shows up.

Why packaging choice isn't just about protection

Produce packaging has to do three things at once: protect against physical damage, allow enough airflow to manage the product's own respiration and ethylene output, and fit efficiently into a refrigerated container without wasting cooling capacity on empty space. Getting any one of these wrong shows up as quality loss on arrival, even if the cold chain itself was maintained correctly.

  • Ventilated cartons are standard for most fresh fruit and vegetables — the vent pattern is usually product-specific, since airflow needs differ between something respiration-heavy like stone fruit and something more stable like citrus.
  • Overpacking or underpacking a carton both cause problems: too tight and produce bruises from pressure; too loose and it shifts during transit, causing impact damage.

Pre-cooling before loading

This is the step that's easiest to skip and hardest to detect after the fact. Produce needs to be brought down to its target transport temperature before it's loaded into the container — a refrigerated container is designed to maintain temperature, not to remove significant field heat from warm produce during transit. Loading warm produce into a reefer and expecting the container to cool it down in transit is a common mistake that results in uneven cooling and faster spoilage, particularly in the center of a pallet where airflow is weakest.

Temperature and humidity are product-specific

There's no single correct cold-chain setting — different produce categories have different optimal ranges, and some are sensitive to chilling injury below a certain point (tropical fruit in particular can be damaged by temperatures that would be perfectly safe for temperate fruit). A supplier who can state the specific temperature and humidity range used for your product, rather than a generic "kept cold," is signaling real handling knowledge.

Monitoring during transit

Temperature data loggers placed inside the container (not just relying on the reefer unit's own set-point display) are the only way to actually confirm the cold chain held for the full transit, including port dwell time and any transshipment. This matters for claims resolution if a shipment does arrive in poor condition — without logger data, it's difficult to establish whether the issue was a cold-chain failure, pre-existing product condition, or handling damage.

What to ask a supplier before ordering

  • What packaging format and ventilation spec is used for this specific product, and is it based on the product's actual respiration rate?
  • Is produce pre-cooled to target temperature before loading, or loaded at ambient/field temperature?
  • What temperature and humidity range is targeted for this specific product, and is it monitored with an independent logger during transit?

Cold chain failures are usually invisible until the produce arrives, which is exactly why it's worth asking these questions upfront rather than discovering the answer in a claims dispute. The specific, product-tailored answers are what distinguish real cold-chain capability from a generic assurance.
