Electrical Panel Quotation Checklist: What to Prepare

An electrical panel is one of those items where an incomplete request makes quotes impossible to compare and can cause trouble at delivery or installation. This guide lists the information to prepare for an accurate quotation.

First, define the panel type

A building or industrial project usually has several panel types: a main distribution board (MDB) at the supply entry, sub distribution boards (SDB) for floors or zones, an MCC for starting and protecting motors, a capacitor bank for power factor correction, an ATS panel for automatic transfer to a diesel generator, and an HVAC control panel for chillers, pumps and air handlers. List each one with a quantity. See the overview of types on the electrical panels page.

Single-line diagram and load list

The most important document is the single-line diagram. If you have an electrical consultant, get it from them. The load list covers each load's power, voltage and, for motors, the starting method. Without these two, only a rough price is possible.

Electrical specifications to state

  • Voltage, frequency and total rated current
  • Current of each feeder and the number of spare feeders for future expansion
  • Short-circuit withstand rating in kA
  • Busbar type, copper or aluminium
  • For MCCs, the starter type: direct, star-delta, soft starter or variable-frequency drive

Mechanical and environmental details

The IP protection degree depends on location: a plant room, an outdoor site and an indoor room differ. Also state the install space, whether cables enter from the top or bottom, and whether front or rear access is needed. Say so explicitly if there is dust, humidity or high temperature.

Standard, component brand and testing

Low-voltage panels are usually specified to IEC 61439. State the brand or class of the main components such as breakers, contactors, relays and drives, because it affects price the most. If the project needs factory testing or a report, say so at the start.

Electrical panels in an HVAC project

In cinema, amphitheater, hospital and factory projects, the HVAC control panel has to be coordinated with the HVAC equipment. Before ordering, get the equipment list, motor ratings and any BMS connection need from your HVAC designer. See our guides on smart HVAC controls and BMS and the chiller quotation checklist.

Delivery time and sending the request

State the project delivery schedule and installation stages, since panels are usually made to order. To start, fill in the quotation request form with the information above and attach drawings if you have them.
